Designed for the busy schedules of teachers and other education professionals, our online master’s degree in general English studies allows you to explore many facets of the field. You’ll build your knowledge of linguistics, literary analysis and history, writing and rhetoric, and related topics.

Admission Requirements for NIU's Online M.A. in English
You can apply if you have:
- A bachelor’s degree in English (Candidates from related fields with substantial coursework in English may be considered.)
- An overall GPA of at least 3.00 and a minimum 3.20 GPA for English content courses
You’ll apply through the Graduate School. Your application materials will include:
- Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
- Two letters of recommendation from people you have a professional or academic relationship with (professors, colleagues, etc.)
- Personal statement describing your interest in the program and goals for the future
- Writing sample of 1,000-3,000 words, ideally in the intended area of English studies
