Admission Requirements for NIU's Online M.A. in English

You can apply if you have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in English (Candidates from related fields with substantial coursework in English may be considered.)
  • An overall GPA of at least 3.00 and a minimum 3.20 GPA for English content courses

You’ll apply through the Graduate School. Your application materials will include:

  • Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Two letters of recommendation from people you have a professional or academic relationship with (professors, colleagues, etc.)
  • Personal statement describing your interest in the program and goals for the future
  • Writing sample of 1,000-3,000 words, ideally in the intended area of English studies
