Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability

NICCS brings together researchers, students, industry partners and community stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to today’s most pressing sustainability challenges. As part of the Illinois Innovation Network, the Northern Illinois University center advances research, education and public engagement in areas including energy, water resources, environmental adaptation and food systems.

Under construction on NIU’s west campus, the new home of NICCS is designed to be one of Illinois’ most advanced sustainability-focused research and teaching facilities. Cutting-edge laboratories, immersive visualization technology, flexible learning spaces and hands-on research opportunities will foster collaboration, discovery and innovation.

Situated in a dynamic peri-urban region, NICCS is uniquely positioned to connect disciplines, sectors and urban, suburban and rural communities in advancing sustainable development, supporting economic growth and building a more resilient future for northern Illinois and beyond.
