Mathematics Departmental Honors Program

If you're majoring in mathematical sciences and meet the requirements, you can graduate with departmental honors. The achievement is noted on your transcript and becomes part of your permanent educational record.

You don't need to be in the University Honors Program to earn departmental honors.

For more information, contact professor Gleb Sirotkin at gsirotkin@niu.edu.

Requirements

GPA

You must maintain the following:

  • Minimum 3.00 GPA in all courses
  • Minimum 3.50 GPA in mathematical science courses numbered 300 and above

Courses

You must take at least four mathematical sciences honors courses numbered 300 and above, including one of the following two-course sequences:

  • MATH 420H and MATH 421H (Algebra I and II)
  • MATH 420H and MATH 423H (Algebra I and Linear and Multilinear Algebra)
  • MATH 430H and MATH 431H (Advanced Calculus I and II)
  • MATH 434H and MATH 435H (Numerical Linear Algebra and Numerical Analysis)

Honors sections for some of these courses are available, but you'll most likely need to talk to your instructor about adding an honors component to a course. This could involve meeting with them outside of class to discuss additional topics, for example.

Paper

You must prepare a senior honors paper on a suitable topic, under the direction of a mathematical sciences faculty member selected by you. You can write the paper in one of your honors program courses, or independently of them. If you're in the University Honors Program and your capstone project is in the mathematical sciences, it can serve as your senior honors paper.
