Bachelor's Degrees in Mathematical Sciences

A bachelor's degree in mathematics will give you a range of skills that are valuable in our increasingly technical society. Programs of Study

Our program features a blend of theory and application. Majors who enter from high school typically begin by taking calculus courses and complete their bachelor's degree in four years.

The first two years of study focus on calculus, linear algebra, basic statistics and mathematical modeling, as well as computing language and technology. These courses provide you with a solid foundation for further study in mathematics, as well as other areas in science and engineering. During your third and fourth years, you can focus on your interests by pursuing one of several emphases:

• General mathematics: The broadest and most theoretical program of study. For students who want to pursue graduate study or teach at the community college level or above.
• Applied mathematics: Focuses on the application of math to real-world problems. For students interested in industry or engineering who want to work in a technical field.
• Computational mathematics: Focuses on methods used to compute mathematical quantities. Builds skills that are increasingly valuable in our computer-reliant world.
• Mathematics education: Prepares you to teach math in high school. Involves earning both a bachelor's degree and certification to teach in Illinois schools.
