The Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention grant was awarded to Northern Illinois University (NIU) to support suicide prevention on campus. The grant was awarded in 2016 in order to help NIU address mental health issues among underrepresented groups on campus. The Helping Huskies Thrive team with the help of the Garrett Lee Smith grant will aim to educate "six to eight NIU community members" each year on Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR) training in order to empower community members to help suicidal students in need.
