Internships for Academic Credit

Applied, real-world software development and problem-solving deepen your understanding of computer science and strengthen your career readiness. To support this, computer science majors may earn academic credit for qualifying employment by enrolling in:

  • CSCI 390: Undergraduate Internship Credit
  • CSCI 690: Graduate Internship Credit

Enrollment is approved based on a review of employment details. Each course may be repeated one time and may count toward graduation requirements.

If you have any questions, contact Daniel Rogness for CSCI 390 or Kirk Duffin for CSCI 690.

Eligibility Requirements

To enroll in CSCI 390/690, you must:

  • Be employed concurrently during the semester of enrollment
  • Hold a paid position (unpaid internships do not qualify for CSCI 390)
  • Complete at least 240 hours of computer science-related work during the enrolled term
  • Perform work that is clearly aligned with computer science academics (routine IT support or simple website creation does not qualify)

Petition Process

You must submit a petition no later than the Friday before the internship semester begins to the department’s undergraduate advisor for CSCI 390 or the director of graduate studies for CSCI 690.

The petition must include a letter from the immediate supervisor or another appropriate representative within the organization (the word “internship” is not required). The letter must specify:

  • Start and end dates of employment
  • Estimated weekly hours
  • A summary of responsibilities

Requirements to Receive Credit

By the Friday preceding finals week of the internship semester, you must submit:

Internship Report

Describes the work performed and how your coursework prepared you for these responsibilities. The report must closely align with the duties described in the employer letter.

Employer Verification Letter

Confirms the accuracy of the report and verifies that no confidential or sensitive information is disclosed.
