Are you undecided about your major? If you're trying to find your path to a fulfilling career, the Academic Advising Center (AAC) is here to help. We'll give you the resources and guidance you need to develop an effective academic plan. Follow our steps to advising success and explore a range of resources you can use on your own time.
As you consider majors, keep in mind that some have limited admissions. You must meet certain requirements to pursue these majors.
One of our experienced advisors will help you identify your goals and skills, suggest paths that might interest you and help you choose courses. Your advisor can also connect you with other support offices across campus, if needed.
You must meet with your advisor before you can register for courses. Check your student email for updates and meet with your advisor before your registration time.
Your courses will help you learn which subjects interest you and help you prepare for career success. No matter what subject a course focuses on, the coursework can help you develop technical, communication and time-management skills, which are valuable in any profession.
NIU has hundreds of different student and professional organizations you can join. By getting involved with these groups, you'll discover new interest areas, develop professional skills and grow your networks.
Consider registering for COUN 211: Career Planning, a three-credit course that can help you choose a major or career. It focuses on career planning as a lifelong process.
Use exploratory tracks to help find the major or career that's right for you. The tracks provide information on major requirements and jobs associated with different areas of study.
Another way to explore majors and careers is to ask questions. Find someone who works in a field of interest and interview them about their job. Use the online explorer tools to find a major that matches the field.
