A Score Doesn't Tell Your Story

Test-blind Admissions

At NIU, we know you’re more than a one-time score on the ACT or SAT. The hard work you put in every day shows in your grades, and shows us you're ready to be a Huskie.

That’s why we’ll no longer consider standardized test scores for general admission or merit scholarships, starting with the fall 2021 freshman class. We’ll look at your high school GPA.

Guaranteed Admission

Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher? You're guaranteed general admission.

If your GPA is below 3.0, we'll get to know you through a holistic application review process – a flexible, personalized review of your application and circumstances. We know high school grades don't always tell the whole story.

Access to More Scholarships

The greatest reward for your strong academic record is a scholarship. If you're applying for admission to fall 2021, we'll automatically consider you for merit scholarships based on your high school GPA alone.

Within Your Reach

With no out-of-state tuition rates and increased scholarship funds, an NIU education is within your reach. Learn more about financial aid options. Our advisors are ready to guide you through the process.

Join University Honors

Our University Honors Program is going completely ACT- and SAT-free, too! Starting in spring 2021, the program won't consider your test score.

“I am one of those students who do not test well. With that comes anxiety, fear of having to do well, fear that this number basically defines your future…NIU is making many leaps to try to set itself apart…”
