What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
When I was growing up, I wanted to be a fashion designer, honestly. As I got older, I started leaning more toward media studies and marketing.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is communication studies with an emphasis in media studies. I chose this major because media studies is something I’m interested in. I also have an interest in social media.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
One thing I’ve found pleasantly surprising about my experience at NIU is the strong sense of community and support. Whether it’s professors taking extra time to help, classmates being collaborative or the many resources available on campus, I’ve consistently felt that people here want me to succeed.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I have met so many people, and I really got a chance to see different perspectives on life.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
Yes, I am involved with UNO and The Talent Co. These groups have helped me feel more confident and get out of my comfort zone.
What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
I feel safe at NIU. There’s lots of resources for help if you need it.
Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
One of my favorite professors at NIU has been Professor David Henningsen, who taught COMS 309. I really appreciated his teaching style because he made the material clear, practical and engaging. He connected the course concepts to real-world examples, which helped me understand how to apply what we were learning beyond the classroom.
How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
By attending class regularly, I’ve been able to stay engaged with the material and keep up with assignments, which has helped me learn more effectively. Being present in class also gives me the chance to ask questions right away and get clarification when something is unclear.
Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus is the Holmes Student Center. I like it because it’s a place where I can both focus on schoolwork and connect with other students. It has a welcoming atmosphere, whether I need a quiet space to study or just a spot to relax between classes.
What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
My advice to a student researching colleges is to not only look at academics but also the overall environment and support system the school provides. When I chose NIU, I was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming community and the resources available to help students succeed. I’d recommend visiting campuses if possible, talking to current students and imagining yourself as part of that community.
Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it gives me the knowledge, skills and experiences I need to prepare for my future career. It also challenges me to think critically, communicate effectively and grow both academically and personally. Beyond academics, college has given me opportunities to meet new people, build connections and develop confidence in myself.
What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
To manage my time between school, work, friends and family, I try to stay organized and set clear priorities. I use a planner to keep track of assignments, deadlines and work shifts so I don’t fall behind. I also set aside specific blocks of time for studying, which helps me stay focused and avoid procrastination.
How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I stay informed about events and services on campus by regularly checking my NIU email and the university website, since important updates are always shared there. I also follow NIU’s social media pages and pay attention to flyers and posters around campus.
What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax and recharge, I like to spend time doing activities that help me clear my mind and reset. Sometimes that’s going to the gym or taking a walk to get fresh air, and other times it’s just listening to music or spending time with friends and family.
Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
Right now, I don’t have a job, so I’ve been focusing on my classes and personal development. In my free time, I enjoy going to the gym, making videos, reading, spending time with friends and family, and exploring new interests.
