What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I was awarded the NIU merit scholarship, an NIU music scholarship and the Maude Nicholson Scholarship Fund in recognition of my academic achievements, musical ability and overall dedication to the community. These scholarships have significantly impacted my experience here. I’m able to focus more on my studies and other activities on campus.
What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
I always wanted to pursue careers in both medicine and music, but I struggled to see how the two could fit together in my practice. Fortunately, I’ve been able to receive great counsel and decided to follow my passions and continue on this path.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I’m currently working toward a dual degree: B.A. in music (jazz studies) in fall 2025 and a B.S. in nursing in spring 2028. I chose this path out of a desire to unite my two passions in a meaningful way. My goal is to incorporate creative, music-centered healing into clinical care.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The close-knit community NIU offers has impressed me. I didn’t expect to experience such a strong sense of connection with professors and fellow students.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I’ve connected with other students by forming study groups via email and talking with them after class. Joining organizations and attending campus events has also helped me meet new people and build connections. These experiences have made it easier to collaborate, learn from others and feel more involved in the campus community.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I’m involved in the Campus Activities Board (CAB), where I’ve developed stronger skills in event planning, problem-solving, listening and teamwork. CAB provides a supportive space to grow with peers while enjoying the work. Being part of this organization allows me to contribute positively to students’ experiences and meet new people along the way. I also volunteered with Music and Memory at Oak Crest Senior Living, where we helped seniors complete brain games and cognitive worksheets and supported them through each activity. The overall experience was humbling and meaningful, strengthening my patience, communication skills and appreciation for genuine hospitality. It gave me a deeper understanding of how small, attentive interactions can positively impact someone’s day and/or week.
