What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I have a merit scholarship and recently was granted the Honors Excellence Award. I was also a recipient of the 143 scholarship from my organization last semester. All were awarded to me because of my good academic standing and my involvement on campus. These awards alleviate my financial burden, allowing me to focus more on my education and engage in experiences that positively impact my growth and values.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I had a strong desire to be a teacher. I wanted to help children achieve their goals in life through education. However, when I was in high school, I fell in love with science and all health-related topics. That’s when I realized I wanted to work and contribute something in the health care field.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I am a nursing major, and I’m on my first track. I chose nursing because I wanted to be more involved with patient care. Being able to extend support and comfort during vulnerable times and being entrusted with lives that are loved by many is a very fulfilling feeling. Aside from that, I want to be in a career that has a deeper purpose and where I can constantly learn.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
My NIU experience showcases an emphasis on diversity, resources and student life. The school has a very diverse community, and it contributes to raising cultural awareness and understanding. Another thing is there are many resources and services on campus. I am totally amazed by their inclusivity and consistent availability for their students’ needs. NIU never fails to give you incredible experiences as a Huskie through their events.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I have established connections with others mostly because of mutual friends and joining organizations. In class, knowing that we are taking the same course and learning the same material is a good starter for conversations. This paves the way for you to build friendships and work with them.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am a sister of Alpha Phi Gamma National Sorority, Inc. I am also a member of the Philippine Student Association. Back in spring 2023, I volunteered for the Philippine Youth Leadership Program. These experiences have given me the ability to step out of my bubble and believe in my potential as a leader. I have created long-lasting connections and memories with many people, not just at NIU, but also at other schools. These encounters have improved my capacity for self-growth and my competence as a professional. Being actively involved on campus has truly made a difference in my college life.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The student success area in the nursing building has been my favorite resource recently. They provide lounges, food and an area where you can hang out or rest. I utilize their study rooms whenever I have to study for my classes. I love making small talk with Mrs. Rudnicki during lunch time. She always talks with enthusiasm. She would ask us about our day and give tips about succeeding in our courses. You can also schedule an appointment with her if you need any help or advice for something.

What Honors Program opportunities or support have helped you get closer to your academic or career goals so far?
The Honors Program holds events and workshops that target the development of their students’ skill and knowledge. They have a bunch of resources located in the Peters Campus Life Building. They also work with other student organizations and offer honors-approved experiences.

What do you enjoy the most about the Honors Program?
What I like the most about this program is their constancy in keeping their students updated. They send out a weekly email about upcoming events and opportunities. Their honors advising is also commendable. Because of their guidance, I am up to date with my honors requirements.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
The instructor I would always remember is Mrs. Patricia Rickett. I had her when I was a freshman for ENGL 203. She is a great English teacher. She gives honest feedback to make you a better writer. I always looked forward to going to her class. She listens attentively to her students. She also shares meaningful life advice and personal experiences. You will absolutely feel that she is a person who has so much passion. Her class was a safe space for me to be myself and trust my voice.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
By attending class regularly, I maintain my academic momentum. I go to lectures so I can listen to professors elaborate complex concepts I do not understand. I get to ask questions and talk to them after class if I have any concerns I want to be addressed. Moreover, it strengthens my relationships with my cohorts and faculty and staff. It pushes me to study and do my homework. It feels rewarding seeing those to-do lists checked off.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
It would definitely be the Holmes Student Center. They provide a variety of activities, such as bowling and pool. They also have study tables where you can do work with your friends or classmates. There are a few locations where you can get food if you're hungry, too. They offer spaces and rooms that organizations can use for events. I am drawn to it because of its vibe and how it serves as a haven for many students.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Look for a college that has a nurturing environment and strong sense of community. Most importantly, choose one that aligns with your goals and values. This will assist you in making the most of your college experience while pursuing your degree.

Why is a college education important to you?
For me, a college education is a pathway toward thousands of opportunities. It is a platform to share my expertise in the fields I want to dive into. Education will be your lifelong partner wherever you go.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I take advantage of Google sheets and my calendar. It always keeps me on track with my schedules and everything. I make sure that I allot enough time for school, work, friends and family. Responsibilities can be overwhelming at times, so I always include self-care in my time management.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I follow student organizations and clubs on Instagram. They post regularly and provide information about their upcoming events. Another one is simply checking Huskie Hub. Some organizations also send reminder emails if you sign up.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I watch Filipino or Disney movies to relax. Sometimes, I try out recipes from different cultures. I also take an hour nap on most days to recharge before continuing my day. If I want to relax by being surrounded by people, I just ask my friends to hang out or hunt for an NIU event to go to.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I work in the Survey Research Laboratory on campus. This job actually lines up with my major because I get to play a part in research on improving health care programs in Illinois. A fun fact about me is that my hobbies include acrylic painting and learning songs to play on my ukulele.
