What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I am a graduate teaching assistant, which provides me with a tuition waiver and a stipend. This financial support has been essential in reducing my financial burden, allowing me to focus on my studies, research and professional development at NIU.
What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I dreamed of many paths at different times. I imagined myself as a musician, teacher, pilot, lawyer or journalist. Over time, however, my passion for numbers and problem-solving guided me toward a career in actuarial science and statistics, which is the path I ultimately chose to pursue.
What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I am pursuing a Ph.D. in mathematical sciences with minors in economics and public health. My journey into this field began with a curiosity about how data can explain the world around us and provide solutions to real-life challenges. Over time, this curiosity grew into a passion for using mathematics as a tool to bridge theory and practice, whether in health, policy or everyday decision-making. I have also been driven by the desire to demystify mathematics, showing that it isn’t something to be feared, but rather a subject full of creativity and practical value. In this technological era, math has never been more relevant, and I hope to inspire others to see it as both fun and empowering.
Have you conducted your own research through Research Rookies, Honors capstones or theses or any other faculty-guided research opportunity?
Yes
Tell us about the research you are doing and why it interests you.
My research in mathematical sciences explores how we can use statistics to better understand three-dimensional natural scenes, which provides insights that are valuable for both human vision and machine perception. I am focusing on developing a method called strip-sufficient density estimation to efficiently model complex, high-dimensional data. What excites me most is applying mathematics beyond theory. My research also includes computational methods for drug delivery in the central nervous system (CNS), statistical modeling of cerebral blood flow (CBF), image analysis and public health applications. Across these areas, my goal is the same: to use mathematics as a tool for discovery, innovation and solving real-world problems.
How has conducting research strengthened your education and experience at NIU?
Conducting research at NIU has greatly enriched my education by allowing me to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems. It has strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills, deepened my expertise in statistical modeling and computational methods, and given me the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines. Beyond technical growth, research has expanded my perspective, showing me how mathematics can drive innovation not only in science and technology but also in public health and society at large.
How will your research experience help you in the future?
My research experience has equipped me with the ability to bridge theory and application, a skill that is valuable in both academia and industry. In academia, it positions me to contribute to advancing knowledge through teaching, publishing and mentoring the next generation of scholars. In industry, it prepares me to apply data-driven insights to solve complex problems and drive innovation. This experience ensures I can make meaningful contributions in whichever path I pursue.
Who at NIU has been important to your success doing research and why?
Two people at NIU have been particularly important to my research success: Dr. Duchwan Ryu, my advisor, and Dr. Lei Hua, my director at Statistical Consulting Services. Dr. Ryu’s guidance on my thesis has been invaluable in developing my research skills and deepening my understanding of complex statistical modeling. Meanwhile, Dr. Hua’s mentorship as a statistical consulting graduate assistant has helped me gain practical experience and sharpen my analytical abilities.
What advice would you give to an incoming student as it relates to research at NIU?
My advice to incoming students is to actively seek out research opportunities and take full advantage of the mentorship available at NIU. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, explore interdisciplinary projects and challenge yourself with complex problems. Engaging in research early will not only strengthen your skills and knowledge but also help you discover your passions, build professional relationships and prepare for impactful work in both academia and industry.
Have you conducted an internship?
Yes
How did you get your internship, and where was it?
I completed two internships that were instrumental in shaping my research experience. The first was with the American Institutes for Research, which I applied for directly through their website. The second was at the University of Chicago with the Linninger Research Group, which I learned about through an email sent by the applications involvement component (AIC) director at NIU. Both experiences allowed me to apply my skills in real-world research settings and gain valuable insights into academic and applied research.
How did your internship help prepare you for your career?
My internships allowed me to apply classroom knowledge to real research projects, building skills and confidence for future work in academia and industry.
What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
One thing that has pleasantly surprised me about NIU is its diversity and strong sense of community. I’ve been inspired by the meaningful relationships I’ve built with international students and impressed by the university’s support systems, which are designed to ensure student success, from academic guidance to research mentorship.
How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I’ve connected with other students by forming study groups, collaborating on research projects and participating in campus events. These interactions, especially with international peers, have allowed us to exchange ideas, build friendships and support each other academically and socially.
Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am currently an international student ambassador at NIU and had the opportunity to serve as a judge at the 2025 NIU Conference on Undergraduate Research and Engagement. These experiences have enriched my time as a Huskie by allowing me to support fellow students, engage with diverse perspectives and contribute to the campus community in meaningful ways.
