Dr. Gary Coover Travel Fund for Graduate Students

Award Criteria and Selection

To the fullest extent allowable under current applicable law, the process and preferred criteria for the selection of scholarship recipients are as follows:

  • The preferred candidate is:
    • A full time, degree seeking graduate student enrolled within the Psychology
      Department, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Northern Illinois University.
    • A first author/presenter of original research.
    • Coauthored, by an attending faculty coauthor, at a National or International
      Scientific Meeting outside the Chicago area.
  • Any professor attending a conference must be the faculty advisor of the award recipient.
  • Graduate students requesting support may receive financial assistance for conference attendance during the current academic year.
  • One or more students may receive financial support each year.
  • The selection of recipient(s) will be made under the guidance of the chair, Department of Psychology and the director of Graduate Studies utilizing an appropriate committee approved by the chair.
  • This award is non-renewable to the same student and/or faculty in consecutive years.
  • In the event a recipient withdraws from the university or is no longer enrolled as a graduate student prior to receiving these travel funds, the funds allocated for the scholarship may be granted to another qualified student.

How to Apply and Other Stipulations

  • The submission due date is May 15 for the current academic year.
  • The travel in question must occur during the current academic year.
  • Submit a one-page abstract of your presentation and a statement regarding how your research presentation fits into your professional goals, along with a current CV to the chair’s assistant.
