Microsoft Teams Tips

When you schedule a Teams meeting, or join one, consider the following tips in order to have the best experience possible.

  • Use Roles to set a presenter.
  • Join on time, especially when calling in, to avoid interrupting the meeting.
  • Keep your mic muted until you are ready to speak.
  • Use a headset with a microphone to reduce feedback and background noise.
  • In large meetings, utilize the chat feature if you have questions.

Teams Phone Conferencing

People can call in to a Teams meeting using a phone, in addition to using the Teams mobile app, desktop app or web browser. This is an option that users who need conference lines can begin using for group calls as an alternative to reserving the Meet Me conference lines.

It is still recommended to join Teams meetings via the Teams mobile app, desktop app or web browser whenever possible for the full Teams meeting experience.

You will receive an email from Microsoft with your Teams conference PIN and instructions on how to use it. If you have questions, please contact DoIT at

Teams Custom Backgrounds

Teams has released backgrounds for video chats and meetings.

To use the default images:

  • Hover over the video screen in a meeting and click on the three dots.
  • Choose "show background effects."
  • Select an image and click "Apply."

To add a custom image:

  • Access the %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads folder by navigating on your computer, or copying and pasting the name of the folder into the search bar of your PC.
    • Use the /users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Backgrounds/Uploads folder on a Mac
  • Once you add images to this folder (be sure they are high resoluton), they should be available for you to use in Teams.
  • You will have to do this for each device.

Test it out today with our new NIU-themed backgrounds!

Please note this may not work for all users and images.
