Web Training

We provide a comprehensive web training program that covers building and maintaining websites, NIU brand standards and best practices in web accessibility and usability. Our goal is to increase the consistency, usability and accuracy of all NIU websites.

Training Requirements

Depending on which sites you maintain, you may be required to complete our training program, though we encourage all users to do so.

If your department prefers to have the Web Team update your site, you can request free updates with our Website Update Request Form.

Department and Office Websites

If you’re a faculty or staff member who maintains a site for a department or office, you’ll need to complete our Level 1 training program to access the Cascade Server web content management system. Level 1 training is offered in three phases.

Access to Cascade and the /cascade-training website will be granted after you register for Level 1/Phase 1. Access to your department or office site will be granted after completing all three phases of Level 1 training.

Level 1 Training

Phase 1 trainings on Maintaining your Website (pdf) will be offered on a monthly basis.

*Trainings are subject to cancellation/rescheduling if we have fewer than three registrants by the day prior. Registrants who have signed up will be notified as soon as reasonably possible.

Online Lynda.com training materials (NIU log-in required)

After you have finished the Lynda.com courses, please take the associated assessments on Blackboard (NIU log-in required).

Additional instructor-led training on CSS and Image Selection (pdf) will be offered.

*Please register only after you have completed Phase 1 and the tutorials and assessments in Phase 2

*Trainings are subject to cancellation/rescheduling if we have fewer than three registrants by the day prior. Registrants who have signed up will be notified as soon as reasonably possible.

If you completed Level 1 training before December 31, 2017, you need to complete Cascade User Refresher Training by June 30, 2018, to retain your access to Cascade through fiscal year 2019. Users who need to take this training were notified in early May.

Refresher Training includes 45 questions and should take less than an hour to complete at a time that works for you. Topics covered include problem solving, AP Style and NIU brand, accessibility, structure and navigation, and content strategy.

We recommend that you spend some time reviewing the university’s web standards before starting training. If you have questions about your web training status, please email webcommunications@niu.edu.

Faculty and Lab Websites

If you’re a faculty member who maintains only your personal faculty or lab site, Level 1 training is optional, though we encourage you to complete it.

Contact us at webcommunications@niu.edu to set up one-on-one training if your schedule doesn’t align with our training sessions.
