Careers and Internships

Students looking to enroll in cooperative education/internship (PSYC 489) must work in an authorized agency for at least 120 hours during the semester in which you are enrolled and fulfill academic course requirements (attending periodic group sessions/workshops, preparing a final written report, and giving an oral presentation). The work experience must be approved by NIU's Career Services and must receive the approval of the psychology internship director and the department of psychology chair.

To apply, complete the application portion of the course contract (PDF) and return it to the department's main office (PM 400) for review. You are required to find and secure an internship before applying for PSYC 489 registration.

Getting Started

  • You will be notified of application status by the internship director.
  • Approved contracts need to be signed by the internship director before being filed with Career Services and the Department of Psychology chairperson.
  • All paperwork must be completed by the second week of the semester for enrollment.
  • Download the procedures sheet (PDF) detailing step-by-step directions of the application process or pick it up at the department's main office in PM 400.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Junior or senior standing, with a declared major in psychology (B.A. or B.S.)
  • Psychology GPA 2.5 or higher
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Work at least 120 hours at the internship during the semester enrolled

Locating an Internship

The internship is a job search process and is highly dependent on your specific career interests within the psychology major. Career Services can help you get the basic tools and information you need to start your search. They provide resume assistance, tips for using online listings (e.g., Huskies Get Hired!) and other useful information (e.g., having a phone/email script for professionally approaching organizations).

Course Sessions and Credit

Eligible students with approved internships may enroll in PSYC 489 by the regular add/drop deadline (second week of classes). This course meets four times a semester (once a month) for a three-hour session. These sessions are usually Friday afternoons and are required for course completion. All assignments are completed online through Blackboard (portfolio completion).

Grading for this course is on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U) basis rather than letter grades. S/U credits count toward degree completion (i.e., major requirements and/or general electives), but are not included in GPA calculations. PSYC 489 can be taken up to two times (six hours) for credit. However, only the first time (three hours) counts toward the psychology major. The following three hours counts as a general elective toward graduation and must be taken with a different internship. For more information regarding PSYC 489, please email the psychology internship director.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can help me with my internship search?

The internship is a job search process and is highly dependent on your specific career interests within the psychology major. Career Services can help you get the basic tools and information you need to start your search. They provide resume assistance, tips for using online listings (e.g., Huskies Get Hired!) and other useful information (e.g., having a phone/email “script” for professionally approaching organizations). You can also check out the “Locating Internships” section for more information about where our interns have worked in the past and other potential sites in the DeKalb/Sycamore area.

Am I eligible to take the class?

In addition to having secured an internship experience related to the psychology field, you must have the following qualifications to enroll in PSYC 489:

  • Junior or senior standing
  • Declared major in psychology (B.A. or B.S.)
  • Psychology major GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher

If you do not meet any of these qualifications but have secured an internship, you can still do the internship. Please contact Career Services if you’d like to register your internship to receive a note on your transcript. You may also be eligible to enroll in ILAS 390 (internship) for general elective credit as an alternative. Contact Career Services regarding questions concerning internships or send an inquiry to careerservices@niu.edu.

Can I take PSYC 489 in the summer?

PYSC 489 is not offered in the summer. However, psychology majors are eligible to take ILAS 390 (internship) for general elective credit as an alternative.

Do I have to work exactly 10 hours a week at my internship to fulfill the hour requirements?

Ten hours is only the recommended average per week to fulfill the 120 hour requirement (over 12 weeks). As long as you complete 120 hours by the end of the semester, you can certainly work less hours in more weeks (e.g., eight hours over 15 weeks). You can also do more hours in fewer weeks (e.g., 15 hours over eight weeks). Some interns find their hours fluctuate a lot based on the organization's needs or workload for a particular week, so that is expected.

Can I do the internship first and get PSYC 489 credit later (or take the class afterwards)?

PSYC 489 has to be taken at the same time as the internship. There are multiple reasons for this. First, we have to make sure the internship is formally registered through Career Services and that you’ve received a satisfactory evaluation from your supervisor. Second, the course is designed around experiential learning principles. This means that you need to reflect on your current internship experiences in order to make adjustments based on what you’ve learned from the course sessions and activities.

Do my internship start/end dates have to exactly coincide with the semester?

There is some flexibility around start/stop dates, especially if you start your internship early. However, your internship start date cannot be later than the second week of the regular semester (course enrollment deadline). You also need to be enrolled by the second week of classes to attend the first required PSYC 489 session. If you start your internship in advance of the semester, you will need to meet with the internship director ahead of time to make sure you get orientation materials for the course. You will also need to complete the majority of your internship hours during the semester that you are enrolled.

Are there letter grades for PSYC 489?

Grading for this course is on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis rather than letter grades. This means that, although the credits count toward degree completion (i.e., major requirements and/or general electives), the course is not included in your GPA calculations.

Are there regular lectures I must attend for PSYC 489?

We usually meet as a class only four times a semester (once a month) for a three-hour session. These sessions are usually Friday afternoons and are required for course completion. Everything else for the course is done online through Blackboard (portfolio completion) or by one-on-one appointments with the internship director.
