Plan Information

The NIU plan covers 80% of eligible medical expenses incurred outside Health Services, 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world, after an annual deductible of $250.

ENROLLMENT IN THE PLAN IS AUTOMATIC FOR STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR 9 OR MORE ON-CAMPUS HOURS AND ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

Students who register for at least 6 hours, but less than 9 on-campus (DeKalb) hours, and students who register for at least 6 off-campus hours may enroll in the plan by completing and returning an application (pdf) to the Student Insurance Office on or before September 2, 1022 for the fall semester and January 31, 2012 for the spring semester.

Plan features for 2011-2012 school year:

• Insurance carrier: Aetna Student Health Insurance
• PPO plan covering accident & illnesses, 24 hours/day worldwide
• No exclusions for pre-existing conditions
• Lifetime maximum is to $500,000
• Annual deductible is $250 per policy year – waived if you also have other health insurance
• Annual out of pocket maximum is $2000
• Cost is $415/semester; $830 for one full year
• Coordinates with other insurance to provide up to 100% coverage
