Welcome to Commuter and Non-Traditional Student Services at Northern Illinois University. Our department is a resource center and lounge space for any type of NIU student. We focus our attention and expertise on students who live off campus. commute from home, have children, are veterans, and/or are over the age of 25. We welcome anyone to our office and lounge space though!

Our staff is dedicated to assisting students find the resources they need to be more successful at NIU, whether that resource involves locating housing options, carpooling opportunities, locker space, free coffee, or computer access. Please visit our office in the lower lounge of the Holmes Student Center. We would be more than happy to assist you.


Word 2007 Citation Seminar

A FREE seminar on how to use the Word 2007 Citation application will be offered from 5pm to 6pm Thursday, June 18, at the Learning Center located in the lower level of Gabel Hall, Room 01D.

Using this function will make writing research and other papers much easier. This seminar is especially valuable for those who might have several papers to complete in a single semester. Staff members and faculty also are encouraged to attend.

This seminar is sponsored by NIU's Commuter and Non-Traditional Student Services and The Writing Center.

UNIV 201 Course Available FALL 2009 for Military Veteran Students

UNIV 201 is a twelve-week, one-credit-hour course designed exclusively for military veterans. Course content includes adjusting to college life and getting involved on campus, making new friends while maintaining old friendships, designing strategies for academic success, and finding and using university resources. Sections are taught by trained instructors and are limited to 20 students, so you'll have the opportunity to get to know other students.

Research at NIU and across the country proves that students who comlpete the UNIV course have higher GPAs and are more likely to return to the university than students who do not take the course. you can register for UNIV throught Nothern's online registration system (MyNIU). The course information is section P6 and class number 14334. You will need a permit number to enroll in this course.
