MLA Works Cited List

The following guidelines for compiling a Works Cited List in MLA style are outlined by Joseph Gibaldi in MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 6th ed. (New York: MLA, 2003).

The sections referenced are 5.2-5.9.

Books

A Book by One Author

The author's first name should be spelled out.

Reese, George. Database Programming with JDBC and Java. Beijing: O'Reilly, 2000.

A Book by Two or More Authors

Names should be given in the order they appear on the title page. Only the name of the first author should be written in the last name, first name format. All other names should follow after a comma in the first name, last name format.

Dietel, Harvey, and Paul Dietel. C How To Program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 1999.

Two or More Books by the Same Author

Use the name of the author only in the first entry; all subsequent entries should be preceeded by three dashes followed by a period, the title, and the publishing information. These entries should by alphabetized by title.

Flanagan, David. Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell. Beijing: O'Reilly, 1999.

---. Java in a Nutshell. Beijing: O'Reilly, 1999.

Two or More Books by the Same Authors

Use the authors' names only in the first entry; all subsequent entries should be preceded by three dashes followed by a period, the title, and the publishing information. Alphabetize these entries by title.

Dietel, Harvey, and Paul Dietel. C How To Program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 1999.

---. C++ How To Program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 2000.

Anthology

The compiler's or editor's name should be followed by ed. or comp.

Baym, Nina, ed. The Norton Anthology of American Literature. New York: Norton and Company, 2002.

An Article in An Anthology

The entry should start with the article's author, fsollowed by the title of the article enclosed in quotation marks, then the editor's name, the name of the anthology, publishing information, and the pages where the article appears in the anthology.

Bradford, William. "Of Plymouth Plantation." The Norton Anthology of American Literature. Ed. Nina Baym. New York: Norton and Company, 2002. 164-204.

Periodicals

An Article in a Scholarly Journal with Continuous Pagination
