What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I wanted to become a scientist. It is the path I am currently pursuing.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I’m pursuing a master’s degree in biological sciences with a concentration on molecular plant virology. My goal has always been to contribute toward achieving worldwide food security through sustainable agriculture. This is what motivated me to decide on this course. I am striving to join the United Nations and other scientists in the journey toward creating a world free of hunger, as stipulated in the United Nation's sustainable development goal two: zero hunger.

Have you conducted your own research through Research Rookies, Honors capstones or theses or any other faculty-guided research opportunity?
Yes

Tell us about the research you are doing and why it interests you.
My main research interest is to understand the pathology of crop plants, with an aim of developing plant resistance to pathogens. I study plant viruses that infect crops of economic importance, such as corn, soybeans, tomatoes and oats. The objective is to understand how viruses succeed in causing diseases in plants. This is important in establishing environmentally friendly ways of developing crops that are resistant to plant viruses, resulting in better yields and improved food security.

How has conducting research strengthened your education and experience at NIU?
Through research, I have been able to network with and learn from esteemed researchers. This has enhanced my knowledge in my field of interest. I have also had meaningful interactions with peers in my field and other science fields. This has contributed to my all-around growth as a Huskie.
