Why did you choose to attend NIU?
I chose to attend NIU because it is close to home and I would be able to attend school and balance family events, friend events and work.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
The first thing I wanted to be was a police officer. But I had some physical education teachers growing up who made an impact on my life, and I wanted to have the same impact on my students.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is physical education. I decided on getting into physical education because I wanted to do something where I can have fun, but also have a long-lasting impact on someone. I also enjoy sports and have been coaching sports through high school and college. So being around sports in a school setting was something I was comfortable with.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
My experience at NIU has been positive, and there are always a ton of resources to be found at NIU. Whether you need help studying or finding people to study with, NIU has everything to become a successful student.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I connected with other students at the beginning of my KNPE program. When we first started, we were told we were a “cohort” and that all of us were going to be in the same classes throughout our journey to graduation. The cohort I went through the KNPE program with turned into one big family. We all share our experiences and help each other out whenever we need it. Being able to have this type of relationship with others really helped propel me to finishing my degree.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
During my time with the KNPE program, we were able to help the cohort below us with any questions they had about the program or classes they will be taking in the future. This allowed me to build new relationships and help others in their future coursework in the KNPE program.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KNPE) was really helpful, and all the professors were willing to help you reach your goals and become who you want to be.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach? My favorite professor would have to be Dr. Gail Koehling. She taught many of our classes throughout the program. I would pick her because she gives you advice and proper ways to fix things she thinks you can improve on. She was always a positive person to be around and knew how to create a fun environment that made class feel not like learning, but an experience.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
I have benefitted by coming to class regularly by seeing my cohort and other fellow students. Building positive relationships around you allows you to look at class not as a burden, but as something you want to go to.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite spot on campus was the Recreation Center. It’s a place where you can meet others while playing a game of basketball, volleyball or any indoor sport you are into.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Find somewhere you will enjoy your time and not feel out of place. People think going far away for college is good, but if you are a family person, going to a school that’s only an hour or two away is not a bad thing. Look at schools that fit you.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it makes me feel like I earned it. I feel like all the hard work I have completed means something to me.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
Once you build your class schedule, write down the times and days on a calendar to help you manage your time.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I learn about events and services from my NIU email.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax, I would take my dog on walks and enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about an exam or homework.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
My hobbies include hiking, camping, sports, video games and working out. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and being able to go outside and enjoy my time. Sometimes I like to stay in and watch a movie or play some games with my friends to stay connected.
