Why did you choose to attend NIU?
For its great engineering program.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
When I was younger, I dreamed of being a farmer, not an engineer. Looking back, I wish I had known more about engineering sooner, because as I’ve grown in this field, I’ve realized it’s the perfect fit for me. Now, I seize every opportunity to share the incredible world of engineering with others, hoping to inspire and positively impact the lives of those around me.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I am an electrical engineering major, and my journey into this field began after working with an electrician named Steve. While Steve’s work wasn’t exactly engineering, he opened my eyes to the world of electrical systems. His guidance sparked my interest, and once I wanted to learn more on my own, it ultimately led me to pursue a career in engineering.

Have you conducted an internship?
Yes

How did you get your internship, and where was it?
I’ve been interning at Omron for almost a year now. I secured this opportunity by complementing my engineering major with a business innovation minor. Additionally, my experience in robotics played a significant role in helping me land this internship.

How did your internship help prepare you for your career?
My internship at Omron has given me valuable insights into the intersection of engineering and business. It has allowed me to better understand how the engineering industry operates and how I can effectively contribute within it. Through hands-on experience, I’ve learned not only the technical aspects of the field but also the importance of business strategies, project management and collaboration in driving innovation and success.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
Clubs have been an integral part of my college experience, and I truly believe they’ve shaped my growth the most. Not only have I learned from being an active member, but leading these organizations has been especially transformative. I just completed my year as president of the NIU Robotics Club, and I’ve recently stepped into the presidency of the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology Student Advisory Committee (CEET SAC). These leadership roles have shown me that I am capable of being a strong, effective leader, one who can inspire, collaborate and drive initiatives forward. Through these experiences, I’ve learned how to navigate challenges, communicate clearly and make decisions that benefit the broader community. I’m excited to continue growing in these leadership positions and apply these lessons throughout my career.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
Throughout my time at NIU, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of my closest friends in a variety of settings, whether it was in the dining halls, through the Robotics Club or even in the classroom. These individuals have become more than just friends; they are the people I work with and rely on daily. Together, we share not only academic experiences but also personal connections that have enriched my college journey. One of the most special connections I’ve made was with my girlfriend, whom I met in my calculus class. It’s incredible how the relationships I’ve built here have shaped my college experience, both personally and professionally.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
Yes, I am involved in several student organizations and extracurricular activities that have greatly enriched my experience as a Huskie. I am currently serving as the president of the NIU Robotics Club and the CEET SAC. These leadership roles have allowed me to grow as a leader and contribute to the university community in meaningful ways. Through these clubs, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of individuals and organizations (such as SWE, NSBE and Huskie Motor Sports) and to organize events like the one-pound bot “dogfight” competition. In addition, my work with the Robotics Club has helped me build lasting relationships with my peers, some of whom have become my closest friends and daily collaborators. I’ve also had the chance to share the world of engineering with others, helping to inspire and positively impact the lives of those around me. These experiences have not only deepened my connection with the university but also provided me with invaluable leadership skills and a strong network of peers and mentors. They’ve truly helped shape my time here at NIU and have been a key part of my personal and professional growth.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
I have had the privilege of working closely with many individuals here at NIU, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support I've received. Mark Pietrowski has been a tremendous help, always available to answer any questions I have. His office is consistently open, and I can always count on him to offer guidance with a smile. Additionally, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Matt Baron, whose insightful advice has been invaluable. He has contributed significantly to our improvements in the Robotics Club, offering thoughtful suggestions in every conversation. I could go on, but what stands out to me most is the wonderful support and positivity I’ve experienced from the NIU departments. It’s truly been a pleasure to collaborate with such dedicated and welcoming individuals.

Are there transfer-specific resources, offices or services that you use to help you succeed at NIU?
Advisors are an excellent resource for most NIU-related class questions. However, it’s always a good idea to review the classes you need to take beforehand. Being prepared helps make the most of your time with them and ensures a more productive conversation.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
My favorite teacher is Donald Zinger — by far the best instructor I've had. He possesses an exceptional depth of knowledge in his field, and his teaching style is both engaging and effective. He provides handouts for us to work through and then takes the time to walk us through each problem step by step. Personally, I find this to be the best way to learn. I truly wish more instructors taught with the same level of dedication and approachability that he does.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Attending class provides a deeper understanding of the material, as it offers the opportunity to engage with the content in real time. It allows you to ask questions and clarify any confusion, ensuring you grasp the concepts fully. Being present in class also gives you the chance to interact with your peers and the instructor, which can often lead to better comprehension of the subject matter. Additionally, it reinforces your learning by providing a structured environment where you can focus and discuss the material, as opposed to simply reading from a textbook or trying to understand it on your own. This active participation can be incredibly beneficial in solidifying the knowledge you need for exams, projects and real-world application.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
My favorite place on campus is definitely the robotics room. It’s not just where I go to work on robots, it’s also where I do homework and plan for events. The atmosphere in the room is always buzzing with creativity and innovation, and it’s the perfect space for collaboration and problem-solving. Whether I’m working on a new design for a bot, organizing an upcoming robotics event or just tackling assignments, this room has become my go-to place for productivity and inspiration. It’s where I feel most at home on campus.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
If you're passionate about engineering, NIU is the place to be! The opportunities here are incredible, and I truly believe it’s worth every bit of the journey. Looking back, I wish I could’ve told my younger self to come here sooner. The hands-on experience, the faculty support and the vibrant community have all played a major role in shaping my college experience. NIU offers a perfect environment for growth, both academically and personally, and I’m so glad I chose to pursue my engineering degree here.

Why is a college education important to you?
College has taught me far more than what’s covered in the classroom. It’s been a transformative journey that has helped me learn to depend on myself, navigate challenges and find my own path. Through a mix of academic experiences, extracurricular activities and personal growth, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of what truly matters — not just in the world, but also to me personally. College has given me the opportunity to explore my passions, develop my values and build resilience. It’s a place where I’ve learned life lessons that extend far beyond textbooks and lectures.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I make it a point to stay ahead of everything. I prefer completing my homework a week in advance and starting my study sessions early. Staying ahead of deadlines and assignments significantly reduces stress and helps me manage my time more effectively, making my academic life much more manageable.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
Simply check your NIU email — everything you need will be there.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I enjoy being creative, and one of my favorite ways to recharge is by writing stories on Google Docs. It allows me to escape into different worlds and express myself in a way that feels both relaxing and fulfilling. Writing not only sparks my imagination but also helps me unwind and reset, providing a much-needed balance to my busy life. It’s my go-to outlet for creativity, and I find that it’s the perfect way to clear my mind and recharge my energy.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I’m currently working at Omron and will continue my internship with them over the summer. Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of hobbies, including playing video games, playing guitar, diving into tabletop games and experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes.
