Major: Master's degree program in higher education and student affairs

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
When I was growing up, I wanted to be a history teacher. Once I began my undergraduate degree, I discovered my passion for higher education and have pursued a career in that field ever since.

I am the first person in my family to attend college.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
M.S.Ed. in higher education and student affairs. I chose to pursue this degree because of the opportunities it would open up in my current career, as well as to gain a better understanding of higher education and everything that it has to offer.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The faculty and advisors have been amazing and super-supportive from day one.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I have made great connections with other students in my cohort and those in the cohort above.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
Since I work full time and am only pursing my degree part time, I have not had an opportunity to join any student organizations.

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you succeed? And how?
The faculty and advisors for my program have been very helpful with any questions that I have and provide helpful feedback.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
It's hard to choose a single professor, but if I had to choose one, I would say Katy Jaekel. Katy was the first professor I had when I began my master’s and was very supportive and always fun to talk with.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
I have made connections with both faculty and other students that help to provide different perspectives. Also, lessons are always interesting and provide an opportunity for great discussions.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?
Make sure that you do your research and try to speak with current students and alumni, if possible.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently?
Since returning to college, I have been pushed to reexamine my time management skills since I am juggling a full-time job with classes.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I enjoy reading for fun and spending time outside.
