Police Ride-along Program
Are you interested in experiencing what it is like to be a police officer? The NIU Police Department offers a ride-along to the public to see firsthand what being a police officer is really like.

Internships
College students enroll in our 8 week internship and gain valuable experience to prepare for a career in law enforcement.
First Aid and CPR
We certify community members in first aid and CPR through the American Heart Association. This is especially helpful to NIU students going into the medical field.
Police Community Relations
PCRs are informational programs offered to the public by the NIU Department of Police and Public Safety on a variety of topics.
RAD Women’s Self Defense
We are proud to teach women’s self-defense through the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) system, which contains both safety discussions and self-defense techniques. Participants learn risk reduction strategies, safety awareness, safety tips, basic stances and hands-on defense training through this easy-to-use system.
A.L.I.C.E. Violent Intruder Training
The NIU Department of Police and Public Safety proactively teaches the A.L.I.C.E. concepts to mentally prepare our community for attacks by a violent intruder. These training seminars instill self-defense skills and confidence in participants.
Community Safety and Emergency Response Online Training
We have designed presentations in accordance with federal guidelines to educate our campus on how to handle emergencies such as: weather, fire and violence.
