Policy Goals

The university is committed to recognizing outstanding faculty performance and to recruiting and retaining high-performing faculty. Supplemental compensation is one of the mechanisms the university uses to fulfill this commitment.

Scope

This policy applies to all faculty (tenured/tenure-track, clinical, research, instructional including instructors) and all administrators in Supportive Professional Staff (SPS) positions who hold faculty rank.

Definitions

Supplemental Compensation recognizes outstanding faculty performance (e.g., Exemplary Faculty Mentoring Award; Presidential Research, Teaching, and Engagement Awards) and recruits and retains high-performing faculty (e.g., endowed professorships, endowed chairs).

Policy

Expectations

As a recognition for outstanding past performance, supplemental compensation is not a payment aligned with the performance of specific duties. In this way, supplemental compensation differs from extra compensation.

The honorific awards and endowed positions associated with supplemental compensation do have an expectation of continued outstanding performance, however. These expectations include continued exceptional levels of teaching and mentorship of students; research, scholarly, or artistic activity; and service or engagement, including mentoring other faculty and participating in university stewardship.

Temporary Nature

Supplemental compensation is ordinarily temporary. As an exception, endowed professorships and endowed chairs may be established on a long-term basis, provided they are negotiated and approved by the Office of the President.

Funding Sources

Funding for supplemental compensation is typically derived from donations or gifts provided to the university by external private entities. Examples of supplemental fund sources include alumni, corporate, and other donor funds that endow named professorships or chairs.

Funding Amounts

Supplemental compensation amounts shall be determined and approved by the Executive Vice President and Provost in consultation with the appropriate Director/Chair and Dean. All supplemental compensation requests will be evaluated and approved by the Office of the President.
