Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
Online Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

Learn to lead and enact purposeful change in educational settings.

Our synchronous online Ed.D. program will prepare you to shape, lead and implement transformational change in education policy and practice. By combining professional skill development with research and theory, our program prepares you to succeed and make a difference in educational settings. Classes meet one night per week; the meeting day remains constant for the duration of the cohort.

If you have an Ed.S. in educational administration from NIU, you can use those credits toward the Ed.D. elective requirement.

The following courses are required:
  • EPFE 714 - Ethical Approaches to Problems of Practice in Educational Leadership: 3 credits
  • LEEA 791 - Systematic Inquiry into Educational Problems of Practice: 2 credits
  • LEEA 792 - Introduction into Doctoral Studies: Becoming Scholarly Practitioners: 1 credit
  • LEEA 794 - Creating Environment for Learning and Growth in Complex School Systems: 3 credits
  • ETR 790 - Workshop in Research and Assessment: 3 credits
  • LEEA 793 - Special Topics: Contemporary Approach to Educational Problems of Practice: 3 credits
  • LEEA 795 - Advanced Doctoral Studies in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies: 1 credit
  • LEEA 796 - Advanced Planning for Improvement in Education Systems: 3 credits
  • LEEA 798 - Research Seminar in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies: 2 credits
  • LEEA 799 - Doctoral Research and Dissertation: minimum of 12 credits (typically 3 hours per term)
  • Elective one: 3 credits
  • Elective two: 3 credits
  • Elective three: 3 credits

  • LEEA 720 - Education Finance and Asset Management: 3 credits (with permission of program coordinators)

  • LEEA 727 - Multitiered Systems of Support for Prevention and Intervention: 3 credits (with permission of program coordinators)
  • LEEA 735 - Administration and Supervision of Educational Personnel: 3 credits (with permission of program coordinators)
  • LEEA 754 - The Politics of Educational Administration: 3 credits (with permission of program coordinators)
  • EPFE 510 - Philosophical Foundations of Education: 3 credits
  • EPS 718 - Research Seminar in Motivation and Education: 3 credits
  • EPS 715 - Education and Human Cognitive Processing: 3 credits

Some courses in the principal preparation program and independent studies with specific faculty members and transfer credit can also be used to fulfill elective coursework requirements with permission of the program coordinator.

You can apply if you have a master's degree from an accredited institution. Preference will be given to applicants who have a professional educator license and pre-K-12 school district experience within the last five years.
