Bridging cultures through language, leadership and learning.

Hola! I'm Concepción a Mexican-born language enthusiast who found a passport to the world through Spanish and English. From Salvatierra, Guanajuato, I grew up dreaming in multiple languages and chasing opportunities that would let me share that magic with others. Today, I'm a university professor, translator, and the coordinator of the Foreign Language Residence Program (FLRP) at Northern Illinois University—where imagination meets collaboration to empower students from around the globe.

What I Do

  • Education and teaching: I taught Spanish at Northern Illinois University, guiding learners at all levels—from heritage speakers to introductory conversational courses. I've supervised future Spanish teachers through the university's Licensure Program, helping them grow into confident, reflective educators.
  • Translation and interpretation: I've spent years interpreting in hospitals, jails, courthouses, and schools, and I've translated numerous books into Spanish. A highlight: transcribing Spanish-language videos for Xavier University and translating them into English for a landmark research project.
  • Leadership and program development: As FLRP coordinator, I train international students to lead and learn together. My work blends culture, curriculum, and community—planning events like the International Dinner and FLRP Talent Night, coordinating field trips, managing budgets, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations when a team leader isn't available.

Path to Here

My journey began with a big dream and a courageous yes from my parents to study English across the border. I spent my early teenage years in the United States, returned to complete junior high and part of high school in Mexico, and then came back for good to pursue higher education. I earned an associate's degree in education from Kishwaukee College, followed by a B.A. in Spanish and Literature from NIU, and I went on to complete my M.A. in Spanish at NIU. Education, language, and culture have been my compass since day one.

Core Beliefs

  • Languages open doors: they're bridges to people, ideas, and opportunities.
  • Curiosity fuels growth: always ask questions, seek diverse perspectives, and embrace new challenges.
  • Leadership is service: true leadership lifts others and builds inclusive communities.

Education

  • M.A., Spanish and Literature, Northern Illinois University
