Take a step into Indonesian culture by learning Bahasa Indonesia online with two options by NIU Indonesian language instructor Rahmi Aoyama, Ph.D.
- Online: For-credit NIU classes taught at Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels
- Distance: Noncredit class taught live online at Intermediate and Advanced levels
Online For-credit
Taught in Indonesian and English, these 16-week Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced courses are designed for students, professionals and others interested in learning Indonesian in a flexible online format. Upon completion, students will be able to engage in conversation and use the language for both formal and informal daily activities. Beginning class will be taught mostly in Bahasa Indonesia and Intermediate and Advanced classes will be taught fully in Bahasa, using authentic materials such as change-of- address forms, job applications, menus, voice mail messages, radio programs, and videos. Students will earn hours transferrable to other universities.
Class size is limited to 25.
How to Enroll
Apply as a guest student on NIU's undergraduate application and enroll. No need for transcripts! If you are a graduate student at another institution, simply sign up as a graduate student at large.

- Advanced level: Module provided by instructor
Course Fees
- Beginning: FLIN103 tuition is $1,744.20 for 5 credit hours
- Intermediate: FLIN 203 tuition is $1,046.52 for 3 credit hours
- Upper: FLIN 300 tuition is $1,046.52 for 3 credit hours
Community College Students
After completing Beginning Indonesian, community college students intending to transfer to NIU are eligible to apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships through the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, which cover tuition, fees and include a $5,000 stipend.
Distance Noncredit
This 20-hour, 10-week course is designed for students, professionals and others interested in advancing their Indonesian in a flexible online format. This course is offered forBeginning and Intermediate levels only. Upon completion, students will be able to confidently engage in conversation and use the language for both formal and informal daily activities.
Class will begin the third week of January. Class size is limited to 15, with the schedule tailored to the availability of students and the instructor.
