Careers and Internships

Internships

Internships are an important part of preparing for a career in the biological sciences. Through internships and biologically relevant employment, students gain hands-on experience, apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings and explore potential career paths. These experiences can strengthen your academic program while helping you build professional skills and connections.

Earning Academic Credit (BIOS 490)

Students may earn academic credit for approved internships through BIOS 490: Cooperative Education and Internship. Prior approval from the director of undergraduate studies is required before beginning the internship.

  • A minimum of 150 hours of internship work is required.
  • Students must submit a formal written report.
  • An evaluation from the internship supervisor is required.
  • The course is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U) basis.

Career Outlook

Degrees in biological sciences prepare students for a wide range of careers in science, health care, research, education and environmental fields. Graduates pursue opportunities in areas such as laboratory research, biotechnology, public health, environmental consulting, wildlife and conservation management and science education.

Many students continue their education in professional or graduate programs, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, physician assistant studies and advanced degrees in biology and related scientific disciplines.
