Omar Ramirez

Omar Ramirez knows it can take a team to help a college student succeed. As an admissions counselor, he works as part of a team helping attract future Huskies to NIU.

"As a first-generation college student, I overcame many obstacles and hurdles to get where I am today and I know how difficult it can be," he says. "I had mentors to help me on my college journey and being able to give back and help future students navigate the process brings me joy."

A native of Elgin, Ill., Omar earned a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement and justice from Western Illinois University after transferring from Elgin Community College. He’s now pursuing a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs at NIU.

He says working as an orientation leader at Elgin CC led him to pursue his current career.

"I know first-hand how daunting it can be to apply for school," he says. "My experiences at Elgin helped spark my passion to help students navigate the college process."

Omar says NIU’s resources and programs offer students multiple learning and volunteering opportunities in a welcoming environment. And, he reminds students to stay focused on their journey.

"Just be you and remember that you belong," he says. "You’ll learn and grow both as a student and a person along the way."
