Matthew Werstler

Admissions Counselor Matthew Werstler has had a varied educational and professional career guided by his belief that "everything connects."

A native of Jonesboro, Georgia, he’s earned a bachelor’s degree in music, a master’s degree in world music from NIU and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public health at NIU. His interests include southeast Asian studies, geographical information analysis, performing arts and community organization. All these areas come together in the work he does for prospective Huskies.

"I like being able to serve students, families and their communities," he says. "Going along with students as they pursue their dreams and career goals is a meaningful part of life."

A first-generation college student, Matthew received financial aid and scholarships, both as an undergraduate and at NIU. He encourages students to take advantage of everything NIU offers.

"NIU has everything," he says. "I’ve worked, volunteered and taken classes all over campus and I enjoy how we have so many resources that work together."

Community is also important to student success.

"Try everything," he says. "Look at courses, certificates, and minors outside your major. Take opportunities to join clubs that provide you a community and that help you serve the greater NIU community alongside others."
