Research

The students conducting research as undergrads are able to gain relevant skills while expanding their opportunities, both academically and professionally.  NIU provides several venues for undergraduate research, with certain departments and schools also offering additional programs.  Students can begin hands-on, faculty-mentored research as early as freshman year with the Huskie Research Rookies program.  Recently, the Huskie Research Rookies program received its first significant gift from Jaymie and Harry Simmon who want to provide scholarship and program support for Research Rookies at NIU. In addition, the USOAR (or Undergraduate Special Opportunities in Artistry & Research) program is open to all undergraduate students with a drive to pursue original ideas.

Specific college or department programs like EURA through the College of Engineering & Engineering Technology, or URAP through the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences also provide opportunities for students to get involved.

The annual Undergraduate Research and Artistry Day showcases the achievements of our students and their research at NIU.  All undergraduate students who are a)currently enrolled at NIU and b) have participated in faculty-mentored undergraduate research are eligible to showcase their work.

Get involved in research and the paths to discovery are endless!
