Northern Light Ambassadors

Meet the 2011-2012 Northern Light Ambassadors

Created in 2011, the Northern Light Ambassadors are a select group of students who are chosen on the basis of academic leadership and excellence and involvement in engaged learning activities who represent each college on campus and in the community.

Students chosen as Northern Light Ambassadors develop ongoing relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and donors within the college and serve as ambassadors to assist with retention, engaged learning, fund development, public relations, outreach, and special events for their college and the university.

Northern Light Ambassadors:

  • Demonstrate academic excellence
  • Demonstrate responsibility
  • See things through and can be relied upon
  • Embody integrity, respect, and flexibility
  • Exhibit leadership qualities, positive attitudes, and pride in NIU

Northern Light Ambassadors may be responsible for the following:

Liaison Students may provide tours and assist with Open Houses, college-wide receptions, and programs for prospective students
Hosting Students may accompany visitors, serve as a representative at various faculty and administrative meetings, and meet with donors
Retention Students may assist the Student Success Specialist in their college with college-specific student success programs and initiatives for the general college population
Public Relations Students may serve in college publications, photos, and stories as needed
Engagement Encourage fellow students to get involved in engaged learning activities (i.e. service, research, etc.)

Qualifications:

Students must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in good standing with a declared major within the college.  Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and a demonstrated involvement in engaged learning activities.

Application & Selection Process:

The application period is now closed.  Finalists will be invited to participate in an interview. Selected students will be notified by the end of March 2012 and must commit to serving from August 20, 2012 to May 15, 2013. In addition, students selected as an NLA must be available to attend monthly meetings on Mondays from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Students will receive a $2,000/year scholarship.
