Going GREEN
Utilize the following resources in order to live more sustainably!
Our Commuter Carpool Connections Program
Off-Campus & Non-Traditional Student Services at Northern Illinois University is proud to offer this free carpool service to students, faculty, and staff. This service is intended to reduce commuting costs, ease parking congestion on campus, and promote informal interactions among students, faculty, and staff at NIU.
The Commuter Carpool Connections service is a secure database that will match you with other commuters in your area through anonymous e-mails generated within the database.
Borrow-a-Bike Program
The Borrow-a-Bike program provides students, faculty, and staff a free alternative mode of transportation for getting around campus.
There is no charge for students, faculty, and staff to borrow a bike.
Just bring your NIU One Card to Campus Parking Services during regular business hours, complete a bike loan form, then get your bike and go!
Bikes are loaned out for up to two weeks. A bike helmet and a bike lock are issued with each bike. There is a charge only if any equipment is returned in damaged condition or not returned at all.
NIU's Task Force on the Sustainable Campus Environment: The Green Team
The mission of the Northern Illinois University Task Force on the Sustainable Campus Environment (Green Team) is to promote environmental responsibility and innovation throughout the institution, including its curricula, policies, operational practices, and external ties. "Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" is one widely accepted definition of sustainability. Stated differently, it involves reorganizing our life support systems - agriculture, transportation, energy production and consumption, etc. - so that life on Earth can be sustained indefinitely. Additionally, the task force will meet the requirements of State Law PA 95-0657.
