About Smart Tablet Education for Healthy Living (STEHL)

Anitha Saravanan, Ph.D., created the STEHL program as a follow up to a project she began in 2022 called “Noticing older adults beyond tablets.” The project - funded by the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NLNM) and All of Us grant -  provided smart tablets (Samsung A7) to older adults living in Barb City Manor and Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

The participants received a smart tablet along with a few hours of training and support on how to access reliable health related information. However, during focus group sessions conducted to evaluate the project, participants mentioned that they needed more guidance and support. They indicated an interest in learning more about using smart tablets to access health information as well as to keep informed on current trends in the health care field.

As a result, STEHL was created!

Objectives

Our goal with the STEHL program is to help you gain a basic comfort level with technology and provide an opportunity for you to access health information from reliable sources.

Upon completion of three workshops, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand basic structure and functions of the Samsung A7 smart tablet
  • Know how to hold and become accustomed to handling and using the Samsung A7 smart tablet
  • Access the internet and reliable health information in the smart tablet
  • Build on prior knowledge and be introduced to new key points to gain access to health-related information

 We’ll help you:

  • Learn ways to use your smart tablet for interacting, communicating and sharing materials
  • Use quizzes, games and flashcards to improve interactive learning
  • Understand how your smart tablet can help you make connections with family and other members of your community
  • Learn more about managing privacy settings
