Misuse of Computerized Identification Information

Policy

It shall be the operating procedure of Division of Information Technology (DoIT) to investigate all claims made by Northern Illinois University (NIU) faculty, staff, students, or affiliates of misuse or theft of Computerized Identification Information (CID) information such as images, contact information, etc., and to report same to the appropriate NIU authorities (e.g., Student Judicial Office, Public Safety, University Legal Services, etc).

Procedure

Reporting by Complainant

All instances of misuse of CID information shall be reported to DoIT Security via e-mail to abuse@niu.edu or telephone at 815-753-8100. Complainants shall be instructed to report instances of misuse accordingly.

Enforcement

Upon receiving a report of possible misuse of CID information, DoIT Security shall request all relevant, available information from the individual reporting the misuse and commence an investigation which shall include, but not be limited too: examining mail headers, finding DNS registrant information, and finding IP block registration information.

Reporting by DoIT Security

Completed investigations of misuse of CID information shall be documented and reported to the appropriate university office or official, (e.g., Student Judicial Office, Public Safety, University Legal Services, etc).
