State Authorization for Offering Online Programs

States require that Northern Illinois University be authorized to delivery distance and online education programs to their residents. Illinois is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) and NIU is an approved SARA institution. As such, NIU adheres to an established common set of standards for offering post-secondary distance education among member states, districts and territories. Participation in SARA is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by postsecondary institutions based in another state. Northern Illinois University is currently authorized, licensed, registered, exempt or not subject to approval in all states. It is your responsibility to understand any special requirements in your state of residence. More information about SARA is available on their website.
