Vacation Time

Faculty and Supportive Professional Staff

Regular Appointments

NIU provides vacation time for faculty members and supportive professional staff with regular appointments whose work schedules don't conform to the academic calendar. If you fall into this category and your appointment is for at least 10 1/2 months, you will accrue vacation days based on your years of service. This may be prorated if you're part time and working at least 50%.

You can accrue a maximum of 56 vacation days. You will earn vacation time according to the following schedule:

Completed Years of Service-at Least Vacation Hours Earned per Month Maximum Accumulation in Hours
0-3 15.6 420.0
3-6 16.3 420.0
6-9 16.9 420.0
9+ 17.5 420.0

You can use vacation time up to what you'll earn in a contract period. If you want to use vacation time beyond what you earn in a contract period, it must come from vacation time you've previously accrued, or as a deduction from your pay.

Any unused vacation balance will be paid out to you when you leave NIU.

Temporary Appointments

Typically, faculty members and supportive professional staff with temporary appointments of at least 10 1/2 months receive vacation based on your years of service. This may be prorated if you're part time and working at least 50%.

If you're eligible to earn vacation time and you're on a temporary appointment, or your position is funded entirely on grants and/or fees for services, you won't be allowed to accrue vacation time beyond your appointment's termination date. Any balance will be adjusted to zero on your appointment's termination date, unless there's a consecutive temporary appointment. If you have consecutive appointments, you can accrue a maximum of two service years' worth of vacation time.

You will earn vacation time according to the following schedule:

Completed Years of Service-at Least Vacation Hours Earned per Month Maximum Accumulation in Hours
0-3 15.6 374.4
3-6 16.3 391.2
6-9 16.9 405.6
9+ 17.5 420.0

You can use vacation time up to what you'll earn in a contract period. If you want to use vacation time beyond what you earn in a contract period, it must come from vacation time you've previously accrued, or as a deduction from your pay.

You won't be paid in lieu of vacation time earned in a temporary appointment. You aren't permitted to extend your service to NIU by taking vacation time at the end of your appointment.

Civil Service Employees

NIU provides vacation time to civil service employees. The amount of time you earn is based on your pay status (not including overtime) and how many years of service you have as a state employee. Your state employment doesn't need to have been continuous. State employment is defined as being paid for rendering personal services to the state of Illinois.

You can accrue a maximum of two service years' of vacation time. If you have more than 14 years of service, you can accrue a maximum of 56 vacation days.

If you're in a position defined as nonexempt (hourly) by the Fair Labor Standards Act, you'll earn vacation time according to the following schedule:
