How did NIU Philosophy help prepare you for your doctoral program/career in philosophy?

The M.A. program at NIU is ideal for someone considering applying to doctoral programs in philosophy. By completing my M.A. at NIU I had a stronger writing sample, a wider breadth of knowledge, and ample opportunities for professional development and departmental service that I otherwise would not have had. Looking at the difference between my M.A. and my Ph.D. applications — I grew a lot in those two short years!

What do you feel is special about NIU Philosophy?

I think NIU is special in that it is the ideal place to explore: explore different areas of philosophy; explore the profession; explore career paths; explore your beliefs. While NIU is notably skilled at preparing students for Ph.D. programs, that's not all its good for. NIU is just as appropriate and rewarding for those who are considering other paths — and you will have the opportunity to openly explore those paths too. NIU clearly cares about their students. They want what's best for you — and they take the time and care to listen to what that is.

Why would you recommend NIU Philosophy to applicants to M.A. programs?

NIU is a friendly, fun, collaborative, and stimulating intellectual community. You will leave with a solid foundation of all major areas of analytic philosophy. You will have countless opportunities to grow your philosophical skills and hone in on your interests. You will gain valuable professional experience. And, most importantly, you will grow as a person.

NIU is also economically feasible. They offer teaching assistantships (and there are graduate assistantship opportunities within other departments as well that philosophy graduate students regularly get) that make the program affordable.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell prospective students about NIU Philosophy?

NIU takes great care to mold their students into philosophers who are not only excellent writers and thinkers, but also intellectually charitable, open, honest, responsible, and respectful members of the philosophical community. I find that extremely admirable.
