Ensemble (300 level)**: Students will enroll in 1 hour of MUSE 330, 331, 360 (MUSE 324 or 350 for jazz primary only; MUSE 372 for steelpan primary only) every semester. An additional 1-2 hours of ensembles may be taken at almost any time in the 7 semesters prior to student teaching as represented by Ensemble (300 level) 0-1 credits. The 1-2 hours are filled by 1 hour in MUSE 335 or 2 hours (consecutive semesters) in MUSE 321, 325, 324, 350, 370, 372 or 373 (324 and 350 do not fulfill req. for jazz primary; 372 and 373 does not fulfill req. for steelpan primary).
MUED 170, 171, 172, 173, or 174***: Students complete 5 technique classes: Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Double Reed, and Strings. Which tech class is taken in a given semester is based on offering rotation and in consultation with advisor.
Notes/Comments: Students may take MUTC 323 (3 credits, Fall only) OR MUTC 301: Theory V (2 credits, Spring only, alt. years). If interested and available, take MUHL 301 (only offered in Spring, alt. years) in Sem. 6. Talk with your advisor on how best to reorganize your schedule with other required classes based on the semesters in which they are offered.
Notes/Comments: This plan is an EXAMPLE of what a minor plan could look like for a typical student. Scores in optional placement exams - foundational studies competency and/or language exams - as well as the completion of AP exams and/or college credit may change the plan. This should not be used in the place of regular academic advising appointments. All students need to meet with the Music advisor each semester to discuss course scheduling; a meeting with the Coordinator of Music Education is also recommended. All requirements are subject to change by NIU.
