A successful instrumental or vocal audition, along with a supplemental a music application is required for admission to the School of Music and ability to declare a music major.
Applied Lessons (200 level)* and Ensemble (300 level)*: Applied Music Requirement-Private Study Pathway, private instrument or voice study (4 total credits in MUSP) and 4 total credits in MUSE (ensemble co-req based on instrument studied).
MUHL 220, 221, 222 or 223**: 3 courses required from MUHL 220, 221, 222, 223 (MUHL 326 may sub for MUHL 222); 2 courses from MUHL 22x will fulfill Creativity and Critical Analysis Knowledge Domain.
Other graduation requirements include completing 40 credit hours at the 300/400 level, including Human Diversity course and the Writing-Infused courses. The Human Diversity and Writing-Infused requirements can be completed through the general education requirements or elective courses.

Notes/Comments: This plan is an EXAMPLE of what a minor plan could look like for a typical student. This should not be used in the place of regular academic advising appointments. All students need to meet with both their Major advisor and the Music advisor each semester to discuss course scheduling. All requirements are subject to change by NIU.
