Graduate Fellowship Committee
Montgomery reported that the Graduate School received a large number of applications for graduate fellowships (43 this year, 31 received last year).
Bose reported that he intends to support 10 fellowships, as in past years. He did explain, however, that he is continuing negotiating with the university and working on the current budget crisis.
New Business
Teaching/Research Assistant Award Recognition: Murali Krishnamurthi, Director, Faculty Development & Instructional Design Center, presented the committee with drafts of a Call for Nominations for the 2004 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards and a Call for Nominations for the 2004 Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Awards to solicit nominations for proposed graduate student awards. The committee members agreed that Krishnamurthi should proceed with the distribution of the Call for Nominations for the 2004 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards, but that other awards are currently available for research assistants (dissertation completion, etc.). Krishnamurthi also described the services offered by the Center to both graduate students and faculty members, and affirmed that he would continue to seek university support to keep these programs going.
Announcements: Bose announced that the Higher Learning Commission site visit, which took place February 23-25, was highly successful based on the verbal evaluations received from the site visitors. The official report from the commission will probably be received in early fall. Bose next explained that he is in need of more research support in order to strengthen this crucial component of the Graduate School. Bose further informed the committee that he has accepted the resignation of Carla Montgomery, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, effective July 1st. Dean Montgomery felt that it would be in the best interest of the Graduate School that she step down as Associate Dean and be replaced with an individual better able to assist Bose with the emphasis on research within the Graduate School. Bose explained that the Graduate School hopes to conduct a national search to hire an Associate Vice President for Research and Associate Dean of the Graduate School. In the meantime, Bose is looking to place an acting associate dean for a one year time period.
The committee members expressed their deep appreciation to Dean Montgomery for her numerous years of dedicated service to the Graduate School.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:25 a.m.
