RADIATION SAFETY COMMITTEE
Membership
of Radiation Safety Committee
- The Radiation Safety Committee
shall consist of members representing each department possessing radioactive
materials or ionizing radiation-producing
equipment. The chair and departmental representatives are appointed or removed
by the president upon recommendation by the dean of the College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences.
The director of environmental health and safety shall be an exofficio member
and the university radiation safety officer shall be an ex officio
non-voting member of the
committee. This committee is directly responsible to the dean of the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Length of terms of
committee members is indefinite.
- Duties and responsibilities
of the committee are:
- Develop and promulgate
policies and procedures regarding ionizing radiation safety within the university;
- Review and grant permission
for, or disapprove, the use of radiation sources for experimental, routine,
or non-routine uses within the university from the standpoint
of radiological health and safety of experimenters, students, faculty, staff,
and the general public;

Recommend candidates to the
president for the position of university radiation safety officer;

Outline the duties of the
radiation safety officer;
- Ensure that all state
and federal requirements and standards are met under the university's license
regarding ionizing radiation sources and that proper reports
are submitted as scheduled;

Review annual reports from
the radiation safety officer or other individuals with delegated responsibilities
for health and safety practices of the university
involving ionizing radiation sources. These include personnel dosimetry and
contamination records, reports concerning use and operational hazard of
ionizing radiation sources
within the university's facilities and waste disposal records;

Investigate alleged infractions
of safety rules or improper use of ionizing radiation sources brought to its
attention by the radiation safety officer or other
responsible personnel; and recommend remedial action to correct such infractions.
