Membership of Intellectual Property Committee

A.     The Intellectual Property Committee shall consist of ten members:

Two ex officio voting members:
1) the vice president for research & graduate studies; president of NIRF and
2) the manager of Technology Transfer Office

Three additional ex officio nonvoting members may serve representing the Office of Sponsored Projects, Northern Illinois Research Foundation, Division of University Advancement/NIU Foundation, or Office of the University General Counsel.

Three voting faculty members appointed by the president for terms of three years each, from the recommendations of the Faculty Senate;

Two additional voting faculty members appointed by the president for terms of three years each;

The terms of the faculty members shall be staggered to provide that a minimum of one appointment be made per year.

The vice president for research & graduate studies; president of NIRF shall be chair of the committee which shall elect such other officers as it deems necessary.

B.     Duties

The committee will serve in an advisory capacity to the Technology Transfer Office and the vice president for research and graduate studies.

(a)  In cases of disputes, the committee will make recommendations regarding:

1.  what intellectual property belongs to the university under the provisions of this policy;
2.  application of this policy concerning the sharing of net proceeds pursuant to 2(b) below.

(b)  The committee will provide counsel, upon request by the vice president for research and graduate studies or by the manager for technology transfer, on issues regarding patenting decisions and intellectual property management.

(c)  The committee will review from time to time this policy and recommend to the University Council and the vice president for research and graduate studies such changes in this policy as the committee deems to be appropriate.

Intellectual Property Committee

The IPC meets as needed, typically twice a year, and scheduled per committee members' availability.
