International Students are assessed the insurance fee if they enroll in at least 1 credit hour with NIU. The credit hour can be on-campus or off-campus.
If the student wants to purchase insurance in their home country and waive the NIU insurance plan, they must have prior approval. If they do not get approval to waive the NIU insurance before purchasing other insurance, they will not be allowed to waive the NIU plan.
If the student wants to waive the insurance during the waiver period, they must contact the Student Insurance office and provide proof of other health insurance coverage that meets our basic coverage.
All students are required to have the NIU student insurance plan unless their health insurance plan includes these basic coverages:
Students with F status visas are required to have the NIU student insurance unless:
1. They have other health insurance coverage from their home government and they have prior approval from the ISFO and SHI offices
2. They are dependents of a lawful permanent resident with H visa or other working visas, and who have other health insurance coverage, the student may waive the NIU insurance.
Students with J status visas are required to have the NIU student insurance unless:
1. They have another health insurance policy from their sponsor that meets the NIU insurance requirements.
2. They are dependents of a lawful permanent resident with H visa or other working visas, and who have other health insurance coverage, the student may waive the NIU insurance.
Students with H status visas may waive the NIU insurance if they have other health insurance coverage that meets NIU basic coverage requirements.
