Eligibility and Enrollment for 2017-2018 Academic Year

Any student who enrolls in nine or more on-campus (DeKalb) credit hours is automatically billed for the NIU student health insurance plan.

Any student who is not taking nine on-campus hours can enroll in the plan as long as they have at least six credits hours; are doing an internship or are working on their thesis or doctorate. Students must complete the online enrollment form by September 8, 2017, for fall coverage or by January 31, 2018, for spring coverage.

Coverage Dates

Fall semester: August 1 to December 31.
Spring semester: January 1 to July 31.

Summer Coverage

Students who are enrolled in the student health insurance plan for the spring semester are automatically covered through July 31, even if graduating in May. Students beginning their studies during summer semester may purchase summer only coverage. Summer only coverage must be purchased no later than the first week of summer classes. Summer coverage dates are June 1 to July 31.



Optional coverage for spouses, domestic partners, and children is also available. Please visit the Aetna Student Health website or contact the Student health insurance office for more information.Coverage for dependents only available through July 31, 2018. As of August 1, 2018, we will no longer offer coverage for dependents.

Qualifying Events

Eligible students and dependents may enroll in the plan during our open enrollment period, or if they experience a qualifying event such as loss of other insurance, birth or marriage. Eligible students and dependents have 31 days from the qualifying event to enroll in the plan.
