Eligibility and Enrollment

Eligibility and Enrollment for 2013-2014 Academic Year

Any student who enrolls in 9 or more on-campus (DeKalb) credit hours is automatically billed for the NIU student health insurance plan.  International students are assessed the insurance fee if they enroll in at least 1 credit hour.  The credit hour can be on or off campus.

Any student who is not taking 9 on-campus hours can enroll in the plan as long as they have at least 6 credit hours, on or off campus, or are taking an internship.  Students must complete the online enrollment form by September 1, 2014, for fall coverage or by January 26, 2015, for spring coverage.

Graduate students working on their thesis or doctorate can enroll in the student insurance plan as long as they are enrolled in at least 1 credit hour.  This provision is available for four semesters only.  The graduate student should complete the online enrollment form by September 1, 2014, for fall coverage or by January 26, 2015, for spring coverage.

Students who have lost their primary coverage may enroll in the NIU plan within 31 days of losing their primary coverage.  Please visit the AHP website for the Qualifying Event form.

Summer coverage:  Students who are enrolled in the student health insurance plan for the spring semester are automatically covered through summer, even if graduating in May.  Students beginning their studies during summer semester may purchase summer only coverage.  Summer only coverage must be purchased no later than the first week of summer classes.

Study abroad:  Students registered at NIU for Study Abroad are required to carry the student health insurance and are assessed the health insurance fee.

Dependents:  Optional coverage for spouses, domestic partners, and children is also available.  Please visit the AHP website for the Dependent Enrollment form.

Enrollment Period:  Eligible students and dependents may enroll in the plan during our open enrollment period, or if they experience a Qualifying Event such as loss of other insurance or marriage.  Eligible students and dependents have 31 days from the Qualifying Event to enroll in the plan.

PLEASE NOTE: NIU does not automatically bill students for the health insurance after the 15th calendar day of the semester.  If you want the NIU Student Health Insurance Plan and have not been billed, please contact Student Health Insurance at 815-753-0122, as soon as possible.
