Eligibility and Enrollment for 2013 -2014 Academic Year

Any student who enrolls in 9 or more on-campus (DeKalb) credit hours is automatically billed for the NIU student health insurance plan.   International students are assessed the insurance fee if they enroll in at least 1 credit hour.  The credit hour can be on or off campus.

Any student, who is not taking 9 on-campus hours, can enroll in the plan as long as they have at least 6 credit hours, on or off campus, or are taking the INT001 internship. Students must complete the online enrollment form by September 6, 2013 for fall coverage or January 24, 2014 for spring coverage.

Graduate students who take are working on their thesis or doctorate can enroll in the student insurance plan as long as they are enrolled in at least 1 credit hour.   This provision is available for four semesters only.  The graduate student should complete the online enrollment form by September 6, 2013 for fall coverage or January 24, 2014 for spring coverage. 

Students, who have lost their primary coverage, may re-enroll in the NIU plan within 60 days of losing their primary coverage.   Please see Forms & Brochures page for the Qualifying Event Form and instructions.

Summer coverage:  Students, who are enrolled in the student health insurance plan for the spring semester, are automatically covered through summer, even if graduating in May.   Students beginning their studies during summer semester, may purchase summer only coverage.  Summer only coverage must be purchased no later than the first week of summer classes.

Study abroad: Students registered at NIU for Study Abroad are assessed the health insurance fee.

Dependents: Optional coverage for spouses, domestic partners and children is also available.  Students must enroll dependents by the 15th calendar day of the semester.

Enrollment Period:  Eligible students and dependents may enroll in the plan during our open enrollment period or if they experience a Qualifying Event such as loss of other insurance or marriage.  Eligible students and dependents have 60 days from the Qualifying Event to enroll in the plan.

PLEASE NOTE: NIU does not automatically bill students for the health insurance after the 15th calendar day of the semester.  If you want the insurance and have not been billed, please contact us as soon as possible.
