Welcome to Northern Illinois University! It is my honor and privilege to welcome the newest members to the Huskie community to share in the wealth and diversity of what our University has to offer. To those who are returning to campus, I challenge you to explore what you haven’t already.
The Student Association is responsible for funding over 200 student organizations here, with a budget of over $1.6 million dollars to so. Making us the best-funded student government in the state, and one of the best funded nation-wide. We are also responsible for operating the $3.5 million dollar Huskie Bus System, the second-largest mass transit system in the state, and one of the largest student-run mass transit systems in the nation. Virtually every aspect of student life falls within our purview, and Northern’s commitment to shared governance and student-centered service ensures YOUR VOICE MATTERS AND WILL BE HEARD.
This year, more than others, will be a time for change and rejuvenation in your experience at college. The Student Association is working hard to insure you have a successful and enjoyable experience during your university life.
I invite you to enjoy the social diversity that our campus offers. I enourage you to participate in one or all of the major events that will be taking place during this school year. I also challenge you to become a part of the University experience by taking the opportunity to see what 200 plus student organizations have to offer –including Greek fraternities and sororities, pre-professional organizations, and social clubs who are all recognized by the SA and are ready to welcome new members on campus. For those who are interested in student govenment you should not miss our SA tables, which pass out FREE promotional SA items while informing the student body about the Student Association. These will be located around campus on various dates so feel free to stop by and give your Student Association a few moments of your time.
The SA is committed to your well being, and that is why we are working for you but this is also a two way street. One way, is to be ACTIVELY engaged in your Student Association or the other being to allow others to represent you. In September, you will have the opportunity to run for or elect the student senators, which are your direct representatives to the SA. They are expected to be responsive to your needs, bringing your issues to the front and advocating the appropriate responses. It is your responsibility to keep them accountable to their mission. Take advantage of the rich culture here at NIU and become involved in YOUR Student Association.
This upcoming school year will be one of the best years yet, as we will be working for and with you.
Here to serve you!
Robert T. Sorsby
