1. How do I apply for a teaching certificate?
To apply for your initial teaching certificate, you will use the Educator Certification System (ECS) at www.isbe.net/ELIS/default.htm. NIU will mail you a postcard after the recommendation has been made and you will set up your account and apply for your certificate according to the instructions on the postcard.
2. What is an endorsement, and am I eligible for an endorsement?
An endorsement can be added to your teaching certificate. It identifies additional subject areas in which you are qualified to teach. Information concerning middle school and secondary endorsements, including eligibility requirements for endorsements, can be found on the ISBE website at: www.isbe.net/ELIS/default.htm
You will need to discuss specific endorsement requirements with your teacher certification adviser.
3. Who can I talk to about a teaching certificate?
You will need to meet with the program coordinator from your field of interest. See the NIU teacher certification web page for names and phone numbers at: http://www.teachercertification.niu.edu/teachercertification/
4. What do I need to do to teach immediately following graduation?
All degree and/or certification requirements must be verified first before you will be able to begin teaching in a public school. Grades for the semester are processed the week after commencement. If you have a job offer, you will need to ask your employer to send written verification of your offer to the Teacher Certification Office at Williston Hall 201 by the Friday of finals week. You will need to have a transcript request and any endorsement applications on file with our office. Once the Office of Registration and Records obtains the final grades, the staff will immediately verify your credentials. The earliest your paperwork would be complete is the Thursday after the commencement day.
5. Where can I find information about subsequent teaching certificates?
The following link will take you to an information page that will also provide a link to the Application for Transcript Evaluation for Subsequent Certificates.
