Admissions Criteria for Undergraduate Military Students

For Prospective Students

Who have NOT taken any college classes need to:

  • Apply to Northern Illinois University through the Admissions Office.
  • Submit a final official high school transcript with graduation date.
  • Submit official ACT/SAT scores (If you have not taken the ACT/SAT, please contact the admissions office for more information on how to apply).
  • If you were honorably discharged and have at least one consecutive year of active duty, submit a copy of your DD214 for 4 hours of general elective credit here at NIU.
  • Students who demonstrate strong motivation and potential for success in college but do not meet one or more of the admission criteria of the Northern Illinois University Office of Undergraduate Admissions may be considered for admission through the CHANCE Program.

Other Important Information: 

For Transfer Students

With previously earned credit hours need to:

  • Apply to Northern Illinois University through the Admissions Office.
  • Submit a final official high school transcript with graduation date.
  • Submit official ACT/SAT scores (If you have not taken the ACT/SAT, please contact the admissions office for more information on how to apply).
  • Submit all of the official transcripts from all of the colleges that you have attended.
  • If you were honorably discharged and have at least one consecutive year of active duty, submit a copy of your DD214 for 4 hours of general elective credit here at NIU.

With More than 24 credit hours to transfer need to:

  • Apply to Northern Illinois University through the Admissions Office.
  • Submit all of the official transcripts from all of the colleges that you have attended.

Other Important Information:

  • Students must meet the traditional transfer admissions criteria when applying to NIU.
  • Contact the NIU Transfer Center with any questions that you might have regarding your Transfer Credit and Admissions to NIU.
  • If you were honorably discharged and have at least one consecutive year of active duty, submit a copy of your DD214 for 4 hours of general elective credit here at NIU.

For Reentering Students

With previously earned credit hours need to:

  • Apply to Northern Illinois University through the Admissions Office.  
  • If you were honorably discharged and have at least one consecutive year of active duty, submit a copy of your DD214 for 4 hours of general elective credit here at NIU.
