Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP)

The Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) provides an opportunity for College of Liberal Arts and Sciences undergraduates to work one-on-one with faculty members on their cutting-edge research projects. The program is designed to stimulate awareness of advanced research and interest in graduate study. The URAP is funded through College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Office and supports approximately 20 students during the fall and spring semester with coordinated support from the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning.

Program Expectations

The specific expectations of the program will vary for each student depending on the proposal put forth by faculty. However, the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning does require that students complete a mid-semester evaluation, as well as a final report. Students are also fully expected to comply with the expectations set out in the faculty’s proposal

Program Requirements

The program is open only to registered junior and senior undergraduates with a GPA of at least 3.0. Students in any department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are welcome to apply, although they may not be qualified for every project.  A few projects may require completion of upper division courses.

Program Goals

The Program goals are:

  • To create and expand opportunities for undergraduates and faculty to work as collaborators in the search for knowledge; to involve students in the creation of that knowledge; and to celebrate the accomplishment of undergraduate researchers.
  • To create a better understanding of what faculty do and why they do it.
  • To foster critical thinking and active learning through the greatest resource of this university: the programs of scholarly endeavor that come from research-active faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • To further demonstrate and reinforce the synergistic relationship between teaching and scholarship.

Program Timeline

The specific timeline of each participant will vary based on the proposal put forth by the faculty member. For Fall 2014 semesters the mid-semester evaluation is due October 10th, and the final evaluation and paper is due December 5th. For the spring 2015 semester the mid-semester evaluation is due February 27th, and the final evaluation and paper is due May 1st.

Application Process

Faculty must submit proposals in January. Approval will be given in late March, positions are then posted online, application deadlines are in late April, student applications are forwarded to faculty in the first week of May, and student and faculty contracts are generally due the Friday of finals week. Student selection is based on the judgment of the faculty member in charge of the project; faculty may conduct interviews with applicants.
